The traditional Viennese coffee house offers space, both private, as an extension of our living room or office, and public, as a waiting room. Its relationship with time is also curious, since the duration of a visit is not necessarily linked to consumption. Time seems to pass differently in a coffee house.
POLKA developed three related projects at the invitation of architect Gregor Eichinger for the group exhibition ‚The Shape of the Café to Come’, presented at Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), Vienna. The ‚Raumstühle’ (‚Space Chairs’) are experimental reinterpretations of the most famous coffee house chair of all, the Thonet Nr. 14.The wood is extended, bent and folded, defining a certain private personal space even while remaining public. The ‚Zeitzucker’ (‚Time Sugar’) dispenser illustrates the passing of time. With just a few crystals passing at a time through its narrow opening into the coffee cup, we are reminded of the preciousness of this resource in former times. The ‚Zeitansage’ (‚Time Announcement’) is a clock that provides only a very approximate indication of what time it actually is, just as a Viennese waiter would ever so vaguely reply if you would ask him.

The development of this dining room chair began with the idea of the removable chair cover. While many standard chair covers have all the grace of an ill-fitting dress, we set out to create a perfectly tailored silhouette with details appropriated from haute couture on their back sides. Eve is produced either without armrests, or with short or full-length armrests.

Floyd is an unconventional family of sofas characterised by their separate, differently-sized and movable back and side elements that grant them a wonderful versatility. With a minimum of effort, for example, a sofa can be turned into a chaise longue by simply rearranging its elements. Floyd comes with accessories – including a laptop table, a deep, round tray, and an elegant lamp with a stem covered in fine leather – that can be plugged into the sofa in a number of different places.

POLKA was invited to create an installation at Messe Frankfurt, and chose objects fit for an Entertainer, who loves the playfulness and spectacle of a fairground. The selected products play with ideas of transformation: altered dimensions change the context of products, unconventionally employed materials produce surprise, thoughts are translated into objects. The products reflect a lively, intense and curious way of living, where content is sought and

For their second room designed for the Hotel Altstadt Vienna, POLKA was inspired by the sweetness and seduction of chocolate. The room is swathed in a variety of brown and cream tones. Bespoke cake-lights, a cake-shaped carpet and a headrest for the bed in the shape of a giant chocolate bar will help you to have the the sweetest dreams.

A good day begins with a smile. This was our inspiration for the design of the moderna plus bathroom furniture range. The tapered openings of the drawers, reminiscent of a smile, reveal interchangeable linings offered in different colours and woods. Simple lines and functionality are twinned with emotion and individuality.
