The simple white napkin, which so often sits quietly under the bread or lies on top to keep it warm, here becomes the basket itself. A thin sheet of wire mesh is enclosed within a removable cotton cover, and can be shaped according to the amount of bread it must hold. The breadbasket was commisioned by the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, for their restaurant ‚Österreicher im MAK’. Subsequently, it went into production with the German company Authentics.

The Travelbox series of textile bags allows you to organise your possessions for convenient travelling. The bags come in various sizes for different items, from make-up to shirts, and are also useful for storage.

DRINKING SET | Lobmeyr

Posted on: October 2nd, 2008

POLKA developed this basic drinking set  in cooperation with the Viennese Vintners.

The drinking set – consisting of white wine glass, red wine glass, water glass, champagne glass, schnapps glass and a carafe – presents a contemporary alternative to the traditional range. The aim was to develop an uncomplicated, elegant and versatile set to be used often in daily life. The champagne coupe can also be used for dessert, and the water glass for beer.

Over the course of numerous discussions and tastings together with the vintners of the Wien Wein Group, POLKA developed the forms of the two wine glasses which allow a wide sprectrum of different wines to be enjoyed. The name is a homage to the well-known wine ‚Gemischter Satz’, which recently received the prestigious Slow Food award.

In the development of this series, POLKA was inspired by the charming variety of forms that can be found in old glass cupboards. Each glass has its own character, and is produced to perfectly suit its purpose. Beside this functionality the delicate muslin mouthblown glass is a means to celebrate the luxury in daily life.

The concept for the room interior developed for the boutique Hotel Altstadt Vienna centres around comfort, transparency and elegance. Curtains run along the walls, allowing the guest to alter the perception of the space. The open bathroom, which is integrated into the room with glass walls and curtains, gives the entire room a feeling of warmth and generosity.

Glassware Beerglass | Lobmeyr

In the summer of 2008, football arrived in Vienna. And when football comes, as we all know, beer follows. POLKA was invited to toast the event with the creation of an elegant glass in several different versions of cutting and engraving, each inspired by a different side of the beautiful game. The octagonal shape of the old-school football can be found in the pattern, as well as a reminder of the famous game in Cordoba in 1978, when Austria defeated Germany.

Porcelain Set | Eno

Posted on: September 1st, 2007

As one of a group of designers invited by ENO to work on different rooms of the house, POLKA created a collection of bone china breakfast dishes ideal both for a quick breakfast in the office or a lazy sunday morning brunch. The partly glazed objects – a marmelade pot, butter dish, sugar bowl, cup and saucer, egg cup and salt and pepper sticks –are surprisingly  tactile, and appear almost velvety on the outside.

Josephine turns cold water into a delicacy. Her drinking glass, inverted, sits atop the carafe like a cork. It is the simple principle of this carafe, which cuts a fine figure beside the bed or on the desk. The base is a feature of both the carafe and the glass. It provides stability, emphasises their elegance, and continues the formal tradition of Lobmeyr.

Josephine is practical. The curve of her neck and its handpolished rim allow for a pour without spills, while any drops of water that might remain in the glass when it is returned to its place run back into the carafe. A series of sketches and prototypes led to the precise calculation of the form and fit of the glass and carafe.

This particular project was born of a broader collaboration between Lobmeyr and POLKA, the intention of which is to develop exclusive objects to refine everyday rituals. Its elegant form, produced in the finest muslin glass, fits perfectly in the range of classics for which the Austrian glass manufacturer is internationally renowned.

Taking the iconic shape of a classic lampshade, re-assembling it and turning it partly upside-down, the Doosey represents a new, playful generation of lampshade, familiar and yet pleasantly surprising. The wild mix of patterns creates a life of its own – adapting to or contrasting with its surroundings.

Enamel Collection POLKAPOTS| Riess

Posted on: October 1st, 2006

The idea of the standard household cooking pot has been changed, modified and mutated. The various elements of these well-known objects of daily life have been rearranged. The result is a collection of creatures, which force you to reconsider your everyday routines and ways of doing things.

The limited edition POLKAPOTS project is a collaboration with RIESS, a centuries-old Austrian enamel company. The company is well-known for the pastel colour scheme of their objects, with which many Austrians grew up. The uniform black of the POLKAPOTS collection is a deliberate counterpart to this heritage, appearing as they do like distant relative, the black sheep in the product family.

WHITE CHRISTMAS

Posted on: December 2nd, 2005

POLKA’s design for a system of interactive LED snowflakes was awarded first prize in the ‚Light Up’ competition organised by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. Text messages could be sent by members of the public to a dedicated number, to make the snow flakes brighten and dim intermittently. Using the perspective of the short street in Vienna’s city center POLKA was able to make it snow every single day. In addition, for every text message that was sent, one euro was donated to a local childrens’ charity.
